There is a rotation sitting arrangement in class. One day the kid gets a chance to sit next to the new girl. She was pretty.

The kid starts talking to the girl in a restrained manner. They start bonding. They had similar interests. They would both wait for the day of the week, when they would get a chance to sit together. One day everyone in the class had to fill out a form, in which they had to provide their personal information. While filling out the form the kid secretly noted down this new girls phone number at the back of his mathematics book.

One day the kid was at his home doing his homework in the evening, the phone rang. The kid would run at every phone call that would come in his house. He ran towards the phoen and picked up the phone. It was the girl! She also had noted down his number! The both talked nervously with each other and the girl tried justify the call with a maths problem which she meant to ask the kid. Alas the kid was pathetic in mathematics!

All the kids friends’ would tease him.

They would exchange notes, find excuses to talk to each other when they would not be sitting together. Would try to impress each other in any possible way. Things were going great. The kid would also get jealous if she talked to other boys in the class.

The entire year flew by waiting for the benches to shift and waiting for the turn to sit next to each other.

March 1998. Last day of grade 3. Everyone was excited the exams had finished, and everybody would be meeting each other in 4th grade. There was a two months break . That was even more exciting. The kid and the girl were talking in the school corridor, their bus would arrive in another 20 minutes. The girl seemed a little pensive. The kid asked what was wrong. The girl hesitantly told the kid that there was a possibility that she would be moving to a boarding school and that she had to appear for an interview in dehradun two days from now. The kid instantly became sad. He didn’t know what to say. The kid said “please don’t go". The girls bus had arrived and the conductor started started instructing the students to form a line. The girl gave the kid a very deep look, turned around and went and stood in the line. The kid kept looking at her but she didn’t turn back.

May 1998. Grade 4 . The students were gathered in the assembly. Everybody had come, first day of grade 4 . Everyone seemed pretty excited, new books, new notebooks , new bags for the lucky few , and everything new for the kids whose parents were rich. The kid had come on time and kept checking the assembly line and the school gate. The kid and the girl had not talked in two months. The kid had gone to his village for the vacations and had just returned a couple of days back. He nervously kept looking at the gate. The assembly prayer had started. Customary instructions were provided by the school principal and he welcomed the students to the new grades. Now the students were directed to move to their classrooms .

The girl had not come. The kid became anxious. He didn’t know what to do. He kept looking back at the school gate as the class queue proceeded to the classroom.

She did not come. The bell rang. It was lunch time in the school. The kid was wandering around in the school corridor, thinking what would have happened. Is she sick? Did she leave the school and moved to dehradun?

While all these thoughts were going on in the kids mind, he saw a man with a few documents in his hands walk out of the principals office . The kid had seen this man somewhere. Suddenly a dreaded feeling engulfed the kid . He remembered! He was the girls father!
